Begin with pickup at your hotel in Cancun, and travel to Ek Balam in a private car, passing the historic, 'Pueblo Magico' town of Valladolid. El Balam — whose Maya name translates to ‘black jaguar’ — is well-preserved and exquisite, and the perfect place to visit an ancient city away from the crowds. See the forbidding sculptures that guard the ‘kingdom of the dead,’ and climb the side of Ek Balam’s largest pyramid to see bright plaster decorations and reflecting pools.
Continue to the Gulf Coast, which is among Mexico’s most important places for migratory birds, and travel along the shoreline in a small boat. See Cayman crocodiles along the edge of the mangroves, and steer past great flocks of flamingoes that feed in the salt-rich, shallow water.
Make the final stop of the day at a local tequila factory, where you can follow the production process from beginning to end and taste Mexico’s national spirit. After the tequila tasting, make the return trip to Cancun for drop-off at your hotel.
