On route, learn about Delhi’s history and how it centers on both the original city of Old Delhi and New Delhi, the latter home to many British Raj-era buildings and modern landmarks.
Head for Old Delhi and see the UNESCO-listed Red Fort, built by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1638. Admire the palace-fort’s exterior and hear how it was the hub of the Mughal empire for 200 years.
Next, visit the Jama Masjid mosque, also built by Shah Jahan. Admire this red-sandstone edifice inside and out, and then enjoy a rickshaw ride through the atmospheric lanes of Chandni Chowk market.
After lunch at a quality restaurant, continue into New Delhi. Visit the 12th-century Qutub Minar minaret and explore Humayun’s Tomb, the Taj-like mausoleum of Mughal Emperor Humayun. Look around India Gate, a memorial to India’s soldiers killed in World War I, and marvel at the flower-shaped Lotus Temple, a modern Bahai temple.
Finally, drive through the imperious government area to see colonial-era landmarks including the sandstone Parliament House and magnificent Presidential Palace. Your tour then finishes with a hotel or airport drop-off.
