Summary

During this extended 7-8hour tour we shall first have the 3-hour walking tour around the two Vilnius ghettos. We will follow the traces of Jewish culture in the old town where the Great synagogue was built and Gaon of Vilnius used to live. You will hear a story about the manifesto and the fight of Jewish partisans. We shall also walk into the Choral synagogue, and explore a very old mazzes making machine there. After that I will drive you to the only active Jewish cemetery in Vilnius where the remains of Gaon of Vilna and Ger Tzedek are. After visiting the cemetery we will drive to the Ponar forest which was the Lithuanian version of a death camp.

Why take this tour?

During this FULL DAY tour Ema (a litvak born in Vilnius in the 80s) shall first take you on a 3,5-hour walking tour around the 2 Vilnius ghettos. We will follow the traces of Jewish life in the old Jewish Quarter where the Great synagogue was built in 1633 and where the great Gaon of Vilnius used to live and study. I will show you a few building where Jewish printings houses, flour mills, a candy factory were. You will hear a story about the manifesto and the fight of Jewish partisans. We shall also walk into the Choral synagogue, and explore a very old mazzes machine there.  After that I will drive you to the only active Jewish cemetery in Vilnius where the remains of Gaon of Vilna and Ger Tzedek are. Afterwards we shall visit the Ponar forest which was the Lithuanian version of a death camp. You will be driven in a comfortable 4-seat VW Golf. I will also share my personal experience of growing up Jewish in the post-Soviet Lithuania. This tour is suited for a max. 4ppl group.
