Just 35 km north of Prague lies one of Central Bohemia's most beautiful towns, Melník, situated at the junction of the longest Czech rivers, the Vltava and the Labe. Melník Chateau sits on a cliff above the confluence of the two rivers. According to the Chronicle of Bohemians by Cosmas of Prague, the last prince of the Psyovians, Slavibor, married his daughter Ludmila to Borivoj I, Duke of Bohemia. Legend has it that Princess Ludmila often stayed here and raised her grandson Wenceslas, who later became Duke of Bohemia and the Czech patron saint. King Charles IV's fourth and last wife, Queen Elizabeth, had the chapel built here in the 14th century. The Lobkowicz noble family acquired the chateau in 1739 and reopened it to the public in 1990. It is home to an incredible collection of art and furnishings. There are also regular exhibitions of modern works of art and a room with an extensive collection of old maps and engravings.
