Discover Porto's best-kept secret, the "other side of the river" on this unique tour. Walk the narrow streets of Vila Nova de Gaia, taste homemade cuisine, and immerse yourself in local culture and history. From classic Porto dishes like the francesinha to local secrets like alheira, each tasting is paired with local wine or beer. Learn about Portuguese and regional history from the locals while enjoying stunning views of Porto, including the oldest winery in Portugal. Don't miss the chance to enter the secret wine cave with aging bottles of port wine that are hundreds of years old. Perfect for travelers who want an authentic experience in Porto.
When it comes to Portuguese wine, Porto and its famous Port wine are what usually come to mind. However, the wine is not actually produced in Porto, but rather across the river in the charming coastal city of Vila Nova de Gaia. This city has a rich history of wine production and storage, and it is home to numerous wine cellars, where the Port wine is aged to perfection.
On our tour, we take you beyond the typical tourist spots and show you the real heart of Porto's wine district. You will have the chance to explore the hidden corners of Vila Nova de Gaia, where the locals go to enjoy their wine and food.
Our tour begins with a traditional breakfast of espresso and Pastel de Chaves, a delicious pastry originating from the city of Chaves in the northeast of Portugal. From there, we will take you to the oldest functioning Port wine cellar in the world, where you will learn about the history and process of wine production and get to taste some of the finest Ports in existence.
After the wine tasting, we will visit three local eateries, where you will get to meet the owners and sample classic Portuguese dishes made with love and care. These family-run restaurants serve homemade food that is both delicious and authentic. You will get to try the famous Francesinha sandwich, a hearty dish made with bread, ham, sausage, beef, and melted cheese, as well as other local favorites. And of course, everything will be paired with the perfect wine or beer, produced right here in Portugal.
Overall, our tour is a perfect blend of culture, history, and gastronomy, providing a unique and immersive experience that will leave you with a deeper understanding of Portuguese wine and cuisine.
