Leave central Brasov with a group limited to eight people. On the hourlong ride to Piatra Craiului National Park, learn the area’s history and choose between two hiking itineraries (from 6 to 9 miles (10 to 14.5 kilometers) and 5 to 6 hours). On the easy-to-moderate route, spot wildlife while exploring the park’s forested lower slopes. Stop at the two traditional villages—Magura and Pestera—recharging with hearty country fare (own expense), such as polenta and lentil soup, at a local guesthouse.
On the moderate-to-hard route, cross the Zarnesti Gorge, sample cheese at a local sheep farm, and dine at a mountain hut (own expense). Extend for three to four hours with an optional hike up part of Piatra’s main ridge to an elevation of 6,500 feet (2,000 meters).
On the way back to Brasov, stopping at Bran Castle, Romania’s most famous castle (entrance fee own expense), is also an option.
