After pickup for your hotel, the port, or the train station in Catania, head to Rifugio Sapienza, stopping at viewpoints for photos of the volcano and surrounding countryside.
On the way up to Rifugio Sapienza, your guide tells you about the history and geology of the volcano. Visit the sites of recent eruptions and the Silvestri Craters.
Upon arrival at Sapienza, choose to hike to an altitude of roughly 6,500 feet (2,000 meters) by Parco dell’Etna nature trails, or reach 9,500 feet (2,900 meters) by cable car and 4X4 minibus (extra cost). The latter option includes stops at the Torre del Filosofo and southeast crater.
On your back down the mountain, pick up flashlights to explore a lava cave.
Finally, visit a winery to sample sparkling and local wines with cheese, cured meat, and olive oil before drop-off at your departure point.
