Unlike more crowded parts of the wall that are closer to Beijing, the quieter Mutianyu is off-the-beaten-track, so you can walk around at your leisure without jostling for space. This section of the wall was built more than 1,400 years ago during the Qin Dynasty and then refortified in 1404.

Mutianyu is also one of the longest and most picturesque wall sections. It has been fully restored, so you are able to see it just as it existed in ancient times. The surrounding countryside is also famous for its fragrant pines and cypress trees. There are no less than 23 watchtowers—some you’ll be able to climb for unforgettable views. The Great Wall of China is an ancient fortification, more than 13,000 miles (21,000 kilometers) in length—it’s also China’s top attraction. Parts of the wall are in poor condition or else crowded with visitors.
