Modern & Ancient Greece Private Full Day Trip :Corinth Canal, Naflpio & Mycenae

Summary

Our trip starts from your hotel meeting. Our first stop will be the Isthmus Canal. Constructed during the 19th century, it is one of the engineering masterpieces as it changed the Mediterranean trade. It is a reference point as it connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland. Our second stop will be the World Heritage Αncient Mycenae Αrchaeological Site & Museum. We will see the ruins of the Mycenaean civilization, which ruled the eastern Mediterranean world from the 15th to the 12th century B.C. and associated to the Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. There you will have the possibility to see the following: • Agamemnon's fortress is entered through the Lion Gate. Once inside the citadel, Grave Circle A is on the right. This was the royal cemetery. Schliemann excavated the world-famous gold death mask uncovering one of the richest archaeological founds. Following the main path up you will reach Agamemnon’s Palace. • You will also encounter the Postern Gate, through which Orestes escaped after murdering his mother, Clytemnestra. • Until the late 15th century BC the Mycenaeans buried their royal dead there. Later they used the tholos tomb. Back outside the Lion Gate, head down to the tholos tombs of Aegisthus and Clytemnestra's Tomb. • The Lion Tomb is a must-see, while the Treasury of Atreus, a.k.a. Agamemnon's Tomb, is found 500m down the road. It is a "tholos" tomb on the Panagitsa Hill at Mycenae constructed during the Bronze Age (circa 1250 BC). Our third and last stop will be Nafplio. The first capital of Greece of the modern Greek Republic after the 1821 War of Independence against the oppression of the Ottoman Empire. It is surrounded by the Palamidi and the Bourtzi fortress. Its name is credited to the famous sailor and member of the Argonauts. There you will have the possibility to see the following: • Palamidi Castle: Positioned on a 216 m. hill, this Venetian citadel has an impressive view over the Argolic gulf. There are 999 steps to the top of the castle. • Freedom Square: Thanking the French for their contribution in our War of Independence against the Ottomans, an obelisk is erected here portraying a French and a Hellenic woman in their struggle for Liberty. • Bourtzi: The water fortress of Bourtzi is a Venetian castle located in the island of Agioi Theodoroi just opposite the harbor. • Constitution (Syntagma) Square: The most historic square in Nafplion. The square is named after the Constitution that Otto, the first king of Greece. • First Hellenic Parliament: Vouleftikon building, built in 1730 with a large hall and characteristic dome, the mosque housed the first Hellenic parliament from 1825 until 1826. • Anastasios of Nafplia church: Check out the impressive church’s dome and the wall paintings decorating the interior. • St.Spyridon church: Outside this church Ioannis Kapodistrias (the first Greek Governor) was assassinated in 1831. • Lunch at a traditional tavern, gelato/loukoumades. Return and drop-off to your hotel.
