Medieval St Peter Port

Summary Description

We will be walking along the seafront towards the main harbour in St. Peter Port then turning into the town itself going up the Pollet and down the High Street and back to the Town Church where we met. There will be 15 minutes to look around the beautiful Medieval church and a chance of a sit down (subject to availability).

I will talk about the development of the harbour, the ship building, smuggling and privateering and the entrepot trade. We will then make our way along the South Esplanade to Castle Cornet. I will tell you of the appalling effects of the Black Death, the English Civil War and how Castle Cornet came to be at war with Guernsey.

We will take a tour around Castle Cornet after there will be free time to go into the museums and shop at your leisure,or, walk back with me to our starting place

Description

Besides little change in St Peter Port, except for the shops, the Medieval Church and Castle are a rare glimpse into a bygone age.

The flowers along the way, in season, are a joy to see.

The firing of the noon day gun in Castle Cornet by keepers in their Militia uniform, is a great opportunity for a photograph along with views of St Peter Port.
