Why take this tour?

In 1808 the Portuguese Court moved to Rio de Janeiro, and that's how it became the capital of an empire. This historical tour will begin in front of the Church Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga, one of the oldest churches in the city, where you will hear about the early foundation of Rio de Janeiro. Pepe, your narrator, is very passionate to tell you the stories and legends that downtown Rio has to offer. You will get to admire the Palacio Imperial from the outside, as you learn about the impact that Napoleon's endeavors in Europe had in the creation of Rio and its architectural heritage. During this tour, you will discover the legend of Mary I, who was locked in a convent, the relogio carioca. Also, you'll pass by the National Museum of Arts, founded in 1937. The tour will take you to admire the Municipal Theatre, and you will hear about the creation of the republic in 1889 and the story of Emperor Pedro II. Your walk will finish at the national library building.
