Ice Cave Adventure under Katla Volcano

Loved this experience! We had so much fun on this excursion and experience the ice caves. Our guide Thema was excellent and very knowledgeable! She told us the history behind Katla as well as lots of other geological information about the caves, the volcano, and the area. It was an easy hike up the mountain to where the current cave was. I will say that since it was the end of the summer the cave was definitely nearing the end of its tour life, as the walls were melting and there was a river flowing through it so we couldn’t go all the way in. But we are happy we still got to see the blue ice!

We LOVED the tour. It was so mind blowingly cool to see, touch, and taste the glacier ice - though heartbreaking to hear how it’s changing every day due to climate change. Such a unique experience - we’re glad we picked this for our trip to Iceland. Gabriella “Gabi” was a fantastic and super knowledgeable guide.

This was an exploratory tour that took us close to one of the many glaciers in Iceland. We started at the meeting point in Vík, a very charming town, by the way. Hawk, our guide, made sure everyone felt comfortable before we started the trip. After a short drive on the paved road, we headed off-road, where our guide, always funny and entertaining, introduced us to the desert while telling us about the historical and natural events that shaped the area, as well as the many Hollywood movies that have filmed scenes there. Once we reached the glacier outlet, he explained the safety measures and showed us how to use the crampons before we started our hike to the entrance of the ice cave. Even though it was almost the end of summer, part of the ice cave was still accessible, and we were able to take lots of pictures. It was a very interesting and memorable tour. I highly recommend it!

We really enjoyed being transported to the incredible world of ice and glaciers for a few hours. Our guide, Tama shared a wealth of information on geology, volcanoes and glaciers and made the whole experience fun for our entire group !
