Hiking - Peña Cortada Aqueduct

This is a circular 14km route. We will start the hike in Calles and first walk along the Tuéjar river on what is known as Ruta del Agua de Chelva - a 5km picturesque stretch on a trail that links Calles and Chelva. Then we'll pass by the historical neighborhoods (Moorish, Jewish and Christian) of Chelva and learn about it's curious history and heritage. The next part of the hike will take us through the agricultural fields of Chelva, where depending on the season it is possible to find pomegranates, almonds and other types of local trees. Towards the end of the route we'll reach the Roman aqueduct - Peña Cortada, the main atraction of the route. There we'll cross the canyon on what is now a bridge and continue along the tunnels of the remains of this historical structure. A short walk from there and we'll get to the starting point in Calles.

The impressive remains of the Peña Cortada Roman aqueduct - one of the main attractions of La Serranía region. The excitement of passing the bridge and looking out from the windows of the tunnel to the canyon below is well worth the visit. Add the murmurs of Tuéjar river in the first part along Ruta del Agua - this is truly a spectacular hike.
