Meet a driver at your hotel in Funchal for 9am departure, then travel to a trailhead for the São Jorge Valley.
Come prepared with sturdy shoes or hiking boots, and bring a packed lunch for a meal on the trail, as you’ll be hiking through a remote area throughout the day.
Set out on the trail into the São Jorge Valley, following a levada that stretches 8 miles (13 km) through the scenic valley. Designed to bring water into the driest parts of the island, Madeira’s oldest levadas date back to the 16th century. As you walk, you’ll see some of the herbs and medicinal plants that thrive in the lush valley—your guide can help point out the most important species.
One highlight of the walk is a picture-perfect waterfall, where you can slip behind the falling water to find a peaceful spot. This 8-hour hiking tour concludes with return transfer to Funchal, and drop-off at your original departure point.
