Harry S. Truman Little White House Admission

This museum was our whole reason for coming to Key West. Harry Truman is my husband’s favorite president. Maybe the anticipation and years of wanting to see this led to a bit of disappointment. Our tour guide Greg was absolutely wonderful! His knowledge and story telling: superb! It is a half an hour only. We felt like we could have heard and seen more. We asked in the gift shop later about the $600 ride in the car. It was explained that up to six people can do that and you see many more places, experience a ride in the car, and so much more. If you had a group, that sounds like the way to go! We definitely think it’s worthwhile to experience. And maybe the cost is to cover expenses. We just thought the value wasn’t what other museums have been. We thought Greg, our tour guide was exceptional!

Very informative tour of the house and the history of the property

We were looking for something to do out of the brutal summer heat so we decided to give this place a visit. The pricing is too high for the tour and what the house has to offer. The tour should not be more than $20 per person and even that seems a bit steep. I expected a nicer interior for a presidential retreat house. The house is very basic and there was nothing impressive or memorable about it. There are only four rooms to tour and you do not get to see the kitchen. If I had to do it again, I would not return as it was not worth $60 for two people.

I am a big fan of Harry Truman and that era, and I think the Little White House does an excellent job of preserving the essence of a president who took his duties seriously but, at the same time, was humble and didn't take himself too seriously. Our tour guide was Joey, and he did an excellent job of telling the stories and setting the stage. If you go, wear a Hawaiian shirt. It's part of the experience, but I won't wreck the story.

From 1946 through 1952, President Harry Truman used this house as his winter vacation home, and because he spent 175 days of his presidency here, it became known as the Little White House. Originally built by the U.S. Navy in 1890, the Little White House served as naval command headquarters during the Spanish-American War, and also played roles in both World Wars and the Cold War. Since Truman's days, many other presidents have also vacationed here, including Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Today, the Little White House has been restored and turned into a museum. Also, don’t forget to check the famous limousine while you are there. The only way to see inside the Truman Little White House in Key West is via a guided tour. But there is a small section near the gift shop that is free for visitors.
