Dadaocheng was once a thriving business district, developed through the trade of tea and fabric. The neighborhood maintains a large number of traditional buildings and businesses, as well as the City God Temple, one of the city’s most popular temples. A stroll through its streets is a ticket to Taipei’s past.
Your guide will pick you up at Beimen MRT Station, where the old walled city gate remains. From there we will head to Dihua Street in Dadaocheng. The streets of Dadaocheng are filled with tradition. From its old buildings made of terracotta, to the narrow alleys leading to the old wharf, the whole district was designed as a starting point for the thriving Taiwan tea trade business, which reached its heyday during the early 20th century. In this guided tour we will learn the history and the details of the rise and fall of this district.
Once in Dadaocheng we will explore the history hidden in the corners and walls of its traditional buildings. Our walking tour will take us to a traditional fabric market. We will wander around the narrow streets of the district, visiting some of the most charming local stores. Some of these stores have been open for decades and they sell traditional Chinese medicine, handmade bamboo utensils or Taiwanese tea. Some recently open stores are the projects of young designers who have found in Dadaocheng the best place to showcase their designs.
Dadaocheng also hosts one of the most popular temples in the city, the City God Temple. The history of this temple is intimately tied to the history of Dadaocheng, as it was founded shortly after the first settlers came to Dihua Street. This temple is also popular amongst the locals for being the place to pray to find your special one.
