Half-Day Tour of Kamakura from Tokyo

Summary

Receive a pickup from your Tokyo hotel in the morning, continuing by train on the 1-hour trip to nearby Kamakura (own expense). During the course of your visit you’ll move between sights both on foot and by train, walking a total of 2.5 miles (4 kilometers). Start your Kamakura visit at the Hase Temple, a site that’s also known as the ‘Temple of the Flower.’ View the temple’s famous Kannon statue, depicting the Buddhist goddess of mercy’s 11 faces and more than 1,000 arms. Each of the faces is said to represent a different stage of enlightenment. You’ll also see the temple’s 30-foot (9-meter) gilded wooden statue, known to be the biggest wood sculpture in the entire country. Finish by exploring the temple’s garden ponds and by checking out the hundreds of small statues found in Jizo-do Hall. Continue your Kamakura trip at Kotokuin Temple, a religious site that dates to the 13th century. During your stop you’ll admire the temple’s famous Great Buddha statue, considered among the most well-known religious icons in Japan. This 42-foot (13-meter) icon is situated just outside against the backdrop of the nearby hills. Make the last stop of the day at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. This famous symbol of Kamakura was originally built in the 11th century, when it was created in honor of Emperor Ojin and Minamoto no Yoritomo. You’ll conclude your trip by enjoying a traditional lunch at a local high-end restaurant, after which you’ll be dropped off back at your Tokyo hotel in the afternoon. Please note that entrance fees are at the traveler's own expense.
