This palace was originally built to help farmers by employing them during a period of drought and famine of three consecutive years during the 1920’s. King Umaid Singh commissioned a British architect, Henry V. Lanchester, to design the golden-yellow sandstone palace – having an ‘Indo-Deco’ architectural style he used an extraordinary blend of Western technology and Indian architectural features. Mehrangarh Fort Known for its beautiful architecture, the Mehrangarh Fort is one of the largest forts in India, built around 1460 by Rao Jodha, one year after he was credited with the origin of Jodhpur. Jaswant Thada cenotaph Built in 1899 is the royal cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II (33rd Rathore ruler of Jodhpur). It is built out of intricately carved sheets of marble and is therefore often referred to as “The Taj Mahal of Marwar”.
