Why take this tour?

Learn how over 1000 years ago Hindu craftsmen excavated the caves in the volcanic rock high up on the slopes Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a collection of cave temples predominantly dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The Elephanta Caves contain rock cut stone sculptures that show syncretism of Hindu and Buddhist ideas and iconography. They were named Elefante – which morphed to Elephanta – by the colonial Portuguese when they found elephant statues on it. They established a base on the island, and its soldiers damaged the sculpture and caves. The island is 2.4 km (1.5 mi) in length with two hills that rise to a height of about 150 m (490 ft). A narrow deep ravine separates the two hills and runs from north to south. On the west, the hill rises gently from the sea and stretches east across the ravine and rises gradually to the extreme east to a height of 173 m (568 ft).

About operator:

We want to give our guests a deeper, fuller understanding of Mumbai through our day tours. When we design a tour, we aim to combine Mumbai’s must-see sights with hidden gems that surprise even lifelong Mumbaikars. For example, our tour uses an unexpected form of Mumbai transport to introduce guests to iconic South Mumbai sights like the Gateway of India and CST Station as well as some lesser known places that are difficult to discover on your own such as Sassoon Dock and Bombay Panjrapole (cow sanctuary). Our goal is to help you get closer, understand better, and experience more
