Just 250km northwest of Beijing, Chengde is the perfect distance for a 2 days getaway. The little town Chengde gained its prominence during the Qing Dynasty when the emperors built a palace where they spend their summer months when the heat in Beijing became unbearable. So as its name suggests, the most popular in summer (April to November). Another highlight of the trip is visiting to Putuo Zongcheng Temple, which is a mini reconstruction of the Potala Palace in Lhasa. Also enroute to Chengde, you can take a visit to the well-preserved and unrestored Gubeikou Great Wall.
