Meet a driver guide at your Tbilisi hotel for the 96-mile (154-km) trip to the village of Stepantsminda, a small town set at the base of Mount Kazbegi. On the way into the mountains, you’ll follow a traditional trade route with views of high peaks and summit Cross Pass, the highest on the Georgian Military Road.
Upon arrival in Stepantsminta, suit up in your warm clothes for the 1- to 2-hour walk to Gergeti Trinity Church, a hilltop landmark with spectacular views. When you make it to the church, sit down for a boxed lunch and hot drinks, enjoying the fresh mountain air. The snowy hike to Gergeti is roughly 2.5 miles (4 km.) and climbs 1,312 feet (400 meters), but if desired, you can extend the walk before turning back to Stepantsminta.
After returning to the base of the trail, begin the return trip to Tbilisi, with the option to visit the Ananuri Fortress along the way. This 11-hour tour concludes with drop-off at your original departure point.
