After pickup from your Amman hotel, travel by private, chauffeured vehicle along Jordan’s desert highway to Petra, the 2,000-year-old rock city in the Shara Mountains.
Make a refreshment stop on route and arrive at the gate to Petra. Here, leave your driver, choose to take a self-guided tour or hire a local guide (additional cost), and then purchase a ticket (own expense) to explore.
Walk through the Siq, the entrance gorge, and marvel at the magnificent rose-pink Treasury (Al Khazneh), as the canyon widens. Then, continue past Petra's other treasures like the 3,000-seater theater and royal tombs.
If you wish, take the steps or a donkey (additional cost) up to the High Place of Sacrifice, a clifftop sacrificial site. View the obelisks to the gods and stone altar where the Nabataeans sacrificed animals, and absorb the bird’s-eye views.
You can also choose to climb or ride a donkey (additional cost) up to the Monastery. Petra’s largest monument. Set at the end of the canyon, this towering building equals the Treasury for beauty.
After free time to explore, reconvene with your driver at the entrance, and conclude your experience with an Amman hotel drop-off.
