Florence in a Day: Heart of Florence & Michelangelo's David
- Experience the magical city of Florence, cradle of the Italian Renaissance
- See the best of Florence with a top rated licensed storyteller guide
- Skip the line and visit Michelangelo’s magnificent Statue of David
Make your way to the meeting point for your first of two tours and meet a Florentine native art historian who will be your tour guide and sidekick for the morning.
As you make your way through the breathtaking city of Florence, your guide will show you the great beauty this stunning city has to offer, from its Roman origins to its darker medieval era and of course its role as backdrop for the explosion of culture that was the Italian Renaissance.
You’ll walk in the footsteps of history’s greatest artists and thinkers as your guides brings it all back to life for you in Piazza della Signoria, the Florence Duomo (Santa Maria del Fiore), the Baptistery with Ghiberti’s famous bronze doors, Santa Trinita’ and Orsanmichele Church, Ponte Vecchio covered bridge, the secret Vasari Corridor and much much more.
Enjoy a gelato in one Florence's best gelaterie, and after a short break regroup with your guide for a guided visit to the Accademia museum with fast-track priority entrance. The massive sculpture of David is considered to be Michelangelo’s greatest masterpiece, the symbol of Renaissance splendor in Florence. Your guide will give you a full explanation of how in his twenties, the young Michelangelo was already the greatest known and highest paid artist of his time when he sculpted this iconic representation of the biblical hero David before he slays Goliath. The sculpture stands 5.17 meters (17 feet) tall and was carved from a single block of Carrara marble.
“No other artwork is equal to it in any respect, with such just proportion, beauty and excellence did Michelangelo finish it” - Giorgio Vasari
As your guide will point out, the Accademia Gallery is also home to many other masterpieces by Renaissance artists such as Botticelli, Paolo Uccello, Andrea del Sarto and many others you may view on your own.
The rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy! Savor a typically Tuscan lunch on your own, a stroll along the San Lorenzo leather market, visit the Porcellino bronze wild boar statue in Mercato Nuovo, or the centuries’ old botteghe and artisan shops scattered throughout the city. Or just rest your feet and enjoy some good old-fashioned people-watching while eating a gelato in one of the Florence's most beautiful piazzas.
