Why take this tour?
Journey through time as your guide - in the shoes of the color merchant Tanguy - beckons you back to a part of Paris that its painters made famous. He should know all their secrets, artistic and otherwise, and will share them with you, this man the Impressionists called Pere 'Father' Tanguy. As eccentric as the artists he catered to, Pere Tanguy will tell you all about the stories behind famous names such as Pissarro and Monet, Gauguin and Lautrec, Van Gogh and Cézanne. Hear of how they triumphed as well as how they fell flat on their faces, with the doubts and fears they might fail all while hoping for renown.
But the artists themselves also left stories about Tanguy, so influential was he to their masterpieces. You’ll get to know them all through their very own words. Revel in this heady and feverish atmosphere of inspiration as you stroll through the haunts of these geniuses, their cabarets and cafes, clubs and — colorshops. You will see the Moulin Rouge through their eyes, as well as other iconic sites such as the Lapin Agile and the Moulin de la Galette whose dancers Renoir made immortal.
You’ll close your visit to Montmartre at the unforgettable Sacré Coeur. Before that, though, rendez-vous at Pere Tanguy’s, 14 rue Clauzel, as described by Claude Monet: “His shop was absolutely miniscule and his window so narrow that you could only display one painting at a time. That’s where all of us started displaying our canvases. Monday was Sisley’s, Tuesday was for Renoir, Wednesday for PIssaro, Thursday for me, Friday for Bazille and Saturday for Jongkind. That was how each in turn spent a day in the shop window of Pere Tanguy.”Let’s meet there and experience a Montmartre of yesteryear, bubbling with the creativity of unknowns which time will turn into household names. Pere Tanguy will tell you all.
