Viator Exclusive: Game of Thrones Tour in Split (3.5 Hours)
Head to the ancient and fascinating Diocletian’s Palace in the center of Split to meet your guide. Then, take a short drive to Klis Fortress, a two-millennia-old fort that played a part in Game of Thrones: it was the fictional city of Meeree. The fortress served as a buttress between the Ottoman and Mediterranean cultures, and has been the seat of many Croatian kings. In its 2,000 year history, the site has been lost, won and reconquered many times.
Learn from your guide how Daenerys Targaryen attacked the city, and visualize the fight between Meereen’s champion and Daenerys’ chosen champion: Daario Naharis.
Later head back to Diocletian’s Palace and see where certain GoT scenes were shot. Explore the famed throne room, and step down into the cellars to see the same spots where slaves plotted with the Unsullied Army and Grey Worm to defeat their masters.
Your Dubrovnik walking tour ends outside the palace. And, if you’re continuing on for the second portion of the tour, you’ll recommence in Dubrovnik on a later day.
Viator Exclusive: Game of Thrones Walking Tour in Dubrovnik (3 Hours)
When you arrive in Dubrovnik, meet up with your local guide just outside Pile Gate and begin an on-foot tour of GoT sites inside the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Old Town.
Wander around the romantic Old Town streets to see where certain scenes were filmed, including those involving the Targaryens — a noble family banished from the city of King’s Landing when Robert Baratheon claimed the Iron Throne. Then, visit the spots where Ayra Stark dwelled on the streets after battles erupted between the Starks and the Lannisters.
Move on to the awesome and imposing city walls that were attacked by the Baratheons in Series 1. Then go check out Lovrijenac Fortress, which starred in many scenes of conflict. From the top of the fort, look down at make-believe Blackwater Bay, and try to conjure up images of the fierce Battle of Blackwater: the largest battle in the War of the Five Kings. Next, head to several parks that were used to film various scenes out in the countryside.
The tour finishes not far from where it began. If you chose to go on the walking tour of Dubrovnik first, your Split tour will take place on another day.
Upgrade Option Including Trsteno Arboretum (5.5 Hours)
Upgrade the tour to see yet another Game of Thrones filming spot. When the walking tour concludes, board a minibus and travel north of Dubrovnik for about 30 minutes to Trsteno Arboretum, which was used as the palace gardens in the city of King’s Landing.
