Begin with pickup at a central Catania hotel in a 4WD vehicle or minivan and set off for Etna. Arrive at the volcano and drive up to 6,560 feet (2,000 meters) above sea level. Your vehicle takes you to areas inaccessible to large transport.
Then, take a moderate hike through the Valle del Bove, a horseshoe-shaped depression more than 3,280 feet (1,000 meters) deep. See the moon-like desert and the surrounding landscapes facing the Ionian Sea. Your guide tells you about the geology of the local area.
Afterward, don a helmet and explore a lava tube.
Finally, make the journey back to Catania and get dropped off at your original departure point.
