Begin with pickup at your Panama City hotel, then make the 2-hour trip to Portobelo in an air-conditioned vehicle. You’ll have an hour to explore the town’s UNESCO-listed fort, which was built between the 17th and 18th centuries to repel attacks from the pirates that patrolled the Caribbean coast, including the fierce pirate Henry Morgan.
Walk the batteries where iron cannons still point out to sea, and hear the legends of Spanish gold that passed through the fortified town—and about the treasures said to be lost along the coast.
After exploring the historic site, board a boat for a 10-minute ride (boat trip not included in tour price) to a nearby island, where you’ll spend the afternoon on the beach. Swim in the clear water, soak up the sun on the beach, or bring a snorkel to hunt for sunken treasure. At the end of the afternoon, return to Portobelo for the trip back to your Panama City hotel, where this tour concludes.
