Completed in 1434, the dome is still one of the largest in the world. In the 15th century construction of this kind had never been attempted since ancient times; but thanks to the ambitions of a flourishing city and breakthrough Renaissance engineering, the Cathedral dome broke all the records.
Construction was carried out by Filippo Brunelleschi whose solution called for the building of a dome within a dome, a solid brick structure on the inside with a tiled terracotta shell on the outside. Visitors can climb to the top of the dome spiralling up in the space between the two domes and step outside for breathtaking views over the entire city.
