Edinburgh Underground Vaults Walking Tour

Really fun experience exploring the vaults! Included some spooky ghost stories and great history of the city. Highly recommend!

Great tour Charlie was entertaining and a lot information. Thoroughly recommend this tour. So interesting a lot went on underground.

Unfortunately, this was a very disappointing experience from start to finish. Our tour guide, Lisa, was extremely rude and showed very little customer service or warmth towards the group. She immediately told us we were late, despite the fact that we had arrived on time. When we gave the name on our booking, Lisa said she had nobody by that name and started to walk away. We then gave another name associated with the booking, but rather than simply checking her list, she didn’t even make an effort to look and continued to make the interaction unnecessarily difficult. Throughout the tour, her tone was consistently passive-aggressive. She seemed to spend a lot of time telling guests off and repeating rules, rather than making us feel welcome or actually telling us about the history of the vaults. At times, it genuinely felt as though we were being treated like schoolchildren rather than paying customers. Another guest appeared to have a disability, and Lisa seemed very uninterested in making any effort to accommodate them. Most disappointing of all was the actual content of the tour. We heard relatively few interesting facts about the vaults or their history, with much of the time instead spent on rules and instructions. There was very little enthusiasm or engagement from Lisa, which made the whole experience feel uncomfortable and, at times, quite intimidating. The vaults themselves were also underwhelming. There are only a few small underground rooms, and they don’t really feel like an extensive underground vault complex. In reality, they felt more like a few damp rooms, with very little to make the experience particularly exciting. For around £70 for 3 people, we felt this was a complete waste of money. I’ve done many tours over the years and this was honestly the worst tour experience I’ve ever had. The guide’s attitude and lack of customer service were the biggest issues, but the limited content and underwhelming attraction itself made the experience even more disappointing.

Louisa was a great tour guide who really played the part well given these are underground vaults with witchery and sorcery. The admission fee was reasonable but the tour could have lasted a little longer for the price. The tour size was appropriate for the size of rooms we were visiting. If you’re claustrophobic or easily spooked this probably isn’t for you, but we appreciated the stories and tales. Overall I would definitely recommend as a filler to your day.
