This fantastic UNESCO off-the-beaten-path tour is created with a focus on stunning yet remote parts of East Bosnia and West Serbia, which will quickly make this trip a highlight of your entire Balkan travels. On this trip, we will visit two UNESCO sites.
East Bosnia & West Serbia – UNESCO Day Tour from Sarajevo
- Visit five unique locations and see the best of East Bosnia and West Serbia, two of which are UNESCO sites
- Discover a hardly known UNESCO site of a medieval graveyard deep in the dense forest and learn about the Bosnian Kingdom
- Enjoy a river cruise over the emerald-green Drina River and admire the unique elegance of the old Ottoman bridge
- Wander around the unique small wooden town built by famous film director Emir Kusturica
- Get a deeper picture of the old times with the unique 45min long Šargan Eight train ride
- Admire the incredible art-like view from Banjska Stena over the Perućac Lake at Tara Nationa Park in Serbia
Upon leaving Sarajevo, the day's first stop is the UNESCO-protected medieval Stecak necropolis of Burati. Being hidden in the forest, this location will blow your mind.
Later we arrive at Visegrad, home to another UNESCO-protected site, the famous Mehmed-pasa Sokolovic bridge. The 11-arched bridge spanning over the green Drina River is a true masterpiece of Ottoman architecture. In Visegrad, we will also visit Andricgrad, a town dedicated to world-renowned Nobel prize winner Ivo Andric.
A beautiful boat cruise on the Drina River is a must-do.
After Visegrad, before crossing the border into Serbia, we will make a short stop at the 14th-century Orthodox monastery at Dobrun.
Once in Serbia, an unmissable experience will be a Sargan Eight train ride. A narrow gauge (760mm) steam railway called Ćira that once connected Sarajevo and Belgrade today is a great experience.
A Drvengrad (eng. wooden town), we will stop for lunch and free time to explore this town made by Emir Kusturica.
Last stop of the day, before return to Sarajevo, will be at Tara National Park with its stunning viewpoint Banjska Stena.
