In December 2001, UNESCO elevated the Alto Douro Wine Region as a World Heritage Site. A title, unanimously awarded, that awarded the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, decreed by the Marquis of Pombal, in 1756. Unique region for bringing together the virtues of schist soil and its privileged sun exposure with the unique characteristics of its microclimate in together with the hard work of the Douro man.
Its Landscape highlights three main aspects: the unique character of the territory, the natural relationship of wine culture with the olive and almond trees and the diversity of local architecture. In addition to these aspects, the candidacy highlighted the remarkable work done by man in the construction of schist walls that extend the slopes and, above all, the authenticity and integrity of the cultural landscape.
