Domus Aurea Golden House of an Emperor Semi-Private Tour

The Domus Aurea was part of the project that Nero had devised to convert and transform Rome into a new city "Necropolis" following the Hellenistic model in the manner of Alexandria, this is, a city with an orthogonal plane with squares and wide rectilinear streets. With this same ideology, 60 years later, Emperor Hadrian built the gigantic Villa Tiburtina 30 km from Rome.

The cave was covered with painted figures. Soon the word spread and the young Roman artists lowered themselves down inside the cave to admire the beautiful ancient frescoes. Today the frescoes are faded but were studied during the Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo and Raphael. Raphael even took inspiration from the frescoes of the Domus Aurea for the making of the Vatican Loggia. Thanks to the discovery of these paintings, the artistic term "grotesque" was created.

The construction of the Domus Aurea also known as the Golden House has been considered the most extravagant construction in the history of Rome.

Inside the Domus the temperature is around 10 degrees. Appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended

The Domus Aurea does not have a cloakroom for visitors and it is not possible to leave it in a trolley case.
In the absence of the Green Pass and a valid document, it will not be possible to access the site and the purchased ticket will not be refunded.
It is not possible to leave luggage.
Photographic and video shooting of the multimedia reproduction of the Stufetta del Bibbiena in room II are strictly forbidden.
From Friday 6 August, visitors will have to show the Green Pass accompanied by a valid identity document to access the site, in compliance with the government provisions in force to deal with the epidemiological emergency from Covid19

From 23 JUNE 2021 to 7 JANUARY 2022 the Octagonal Hall host the exhibition: “Raphael and the Domus Aurea” From Monday to Thursday the visit, with mandatory accompaniment, is limited only to the Octagonal Hall (you can see just one room), including the exhibition “Raphael and the Domus Aurea”, . From Friday to Sunday mandatory guided tour, is extended to the whole archeological site, including the exhibition in the Octagonal Hall and all other rooms therefore we strongly recommend that you schedule your Domus Aurea Tour on Friday, Saturday or Sunday to enjoy a full tour of the Domus Aurea, as on the other days of the week almost all of the site is closed to visitors.
