Summary

For this tour of South Carolina’s oldest city, arrive at the Old South Carriage Company at 14 Anson Street about 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time to check in. Climb into a carriage led by a horse and guide. The horse pulling your carriage is the same kind of draft horse that worked American farms in the 1800s, adding to the authenticity. During the tour, your carriage whisks through 30 blocks of the city’s historic area, about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers). Pass by antebellum mansions, old churches, and historical homes, such as the former residence of South Carolina governor William Aiken Jr. Your guide revisits more than 300 years of history, and you’ll learn about the city’s founding and its role in the Civil War. Cover the historical district without getting tired from walking or having to arrange transportation. Your tour ends back at Old South Carriage Company.

About operator:

See historic Charleston from the vantage point of an Old South Carriage. Family owned and operated since 1983, Old South Carriage Company offers narrated, hour-long carriage tours by licensed guides, day and night. Come to our stable at 14 Anson Street, just 2 blocks from The City Market and meet our friendly and professional staff. Reservations are not necessary but recommended as tours frequently sell out. We use French Percherons and Belgian Draft horses. These sturdy equine employees vacation at Sugah Cain, the owner's 65-acre plantation on John's Island. For 2-3 months annually, these beautiful horses are free to run in large pastures or graze under century-old live oaks. Look for the Red Sash: our symbol of a quality horse-drawn carriage tour of Charleston, South Carolina.
