Why take this tour?

Step inside the spooky halls of the Old City Jail, built in 1802, which housed the city's most infamous criminals until 1939. Hear the chilling tales of the murderess Lavinia Fisher, Civil War-era prisoners, and even pirates whose ghosts are claimed to roam the cells. After meeting your tour guide, enter the dark and sinister Old City Jail. This centuries-old structure has tales to tell, and the rumored hauntings by its more fearsome convicts are enough to send chills up your spine as you walk the halls. Hear the story of the beautiful Lavinia Fisher, who murdered unsuspecting guests at the hotel she ran with her husband. Learn about the tragic fate of Denmark Vesey, hanged for planning a slave revolt. About operator:

Our founder, John LaVerne, has a deep love for Charleston, history, and storytelling. While being a tour guide was initially just a hobby, about 60 seconds into giving his first tour, John was hooked – by his enthralled audience and the chance to share his love of Charleston with others. He founded Bulldog Tours to raise funds for the preservation of The Old Exchange Building. The rest, as the tour team says, is history.
