Your half-day tour into the Roman countryside starts as you leave the city by coach or van to travel along the ancient Appian Way, a road whose history dates back to 312 BC to provide strategic access in and out of the Rome republic.
You’ll make stops to explore the historical sites around the Appian Way on foot, starting with a walk as you leave the southern edge of the city. With your guide, enjoy the scenery and snap a few photos before continuing in your vehicle to one of Rome’s ancient burial sites, either the Catacombs of San Sebastiano or the Catacombs of San Callisto. Follow your guide through the underground tunnels, learning about the burial process during this period of history.
Next, head to the remains of a Roman aqueduct, where you’ll be wowed by the Romans’ masterful use of engineering to bring water into the city. Hear from your guide about why this area was chosen as the site of the aqueducts, and enjoy time for photos before the drive back to Rome, where your tour ends.
