Hida-Osaka spreads at the west foot of the active volcano, Mt. Ontake. Gandate Park where the tour takes place is the symbolic site to learn about the history of the volcanic activities of Mt. Ontake 54,000 years ago. The concept of this tour is “portable outdoor café” that you can enjoy sweets and coffee treats in a swinging hammock in the forest of the lava plateau. At the hammock site, you will make your own spoon by sanding a spoon-shaped wood piece. You can use the spoon for the sweets during the tour, too. This is an easy hiking tour of 2 km (1.2 miles) which includes a visit to one waterfall, and a walk in the forest filled with carpets of leaves, and an outdoorsy hot sandwich cooking time. It's the best choice to enjoy forest bathing (shinrin-yoku), too.
Hida-Osaka is situated 40 minutes south from Takayama, and 40 minutes north from Gero either by train or bus or car. It's the best choice for those who are looking for the off-the-beaten path experience in Japan.
