Budapest Jewish Cuisine & Culture Walk

Summary

Join your guide in central Budapest and head toward the Seventh District, the epicenter of the Jewish community and a hotspot with locals and visitors alike. Your guide will discuss the history of the area as you go, from its medieval roots to its transformation into a ghetto during World War II. Hear how the remaining community set the foundations for the popular scene it is today, with lively bars, restaurants and myriad tributes to its previous generations. Continue on to see Europe’s largest synagogue, the Moorish-style Dohány Street Synagogue. You’ll pause to view important Jewish monuments from the WWII that pay homage to the millions of lives lost. Then discover the local cuisine, stopping at eateries for savory tastes of sausage and goose crackling or sweet treats like turos taska and flodni. The exact tasting menu for your tour will vary depending on the day. After satiating your palette, you’ll explore the street art of the neighborhood and chic shops that give the area its trendy reputation. Then it’s time for a traditional Jewish lunch. Your guide will take you to a restaurant for a hot helping of solet, a Hungarian take on bean stew, and goose soup. Your meal will also be complemented with a smooth glass of wine. After a delicious meal and good conversation, you’ll head to a coffee bar to rejuvenate, followed by some kosher pálinka at one of the city’s hip ruin pubs or a local wine bar. After this stop your tour will conclude, and your guide will provide additional recommendations for exploring on your own.
