Very few tourists are aware of the fact that Lanzarote has a desert and even less of them have actually visited it. But there it is...our mini Sahara....
Different geodiversity means different biodiversity and our desert is full of fascinating species and interesting stories. More than 50% of the plant life is endemic to Lanzarote, some exclusive to the desert. Insects, butterflies, snails and lizards are part of the food chain of the superstars of this habitat, our big three: the houbara bustard, cream coloured courser and stone curlew. Other common resident species are the southern shrike, hoopoe, trumpeter finch, barbary partridge, lesser short-toed lark, berthelot´s pipit, canary raven and canary kestrel. With a bit of luck it is possible to spot even a Barbary falcon or an Egyptian vulture...and all the possible surprises of the day!
The Landrover is our hide and we can observe the birds from close, always respecting not to bother them. This tour is a beautiful sightseeing morning also for the non birding spouses as the landscape is stunning and the stories of the birds, plants and people of the desert are fascinating.
