Why take this tour?
Welcome to Bamberg, a well-preserved old town, a charming place always worth a visit! The duke of Bavaria Henry II, after becoming Germany’s king, intended to transform Bamberg into a “second Rome”. Standing on seven hills surrounded by beautiful countryside and dominated by the imperial cathedral, this unique town was a center of imperial and episcopal power for almost a thousand years. With its outstanding example of an early medieval town of central Europe, it is no wonder that the Old Town is listed on Unesco World Heritage List! Inside the Cathedral you will admire the very impressive marble tomb of Emperor Heinrich II and his wife, the Empress Kunigunde or the tomb of Pope Clement II, the only papal grave in Germany. Even the construction of the Old Town Hall is fascinating. According to a local legend, the bishop refused to give the citizens of Bamberg the land they needed to build their Town Hall, so the people started throwing stakes and logs in the river Regnitz, which ended up making a small artificial island upon which they built their Town Hall.
