Authentic Peranakan and Malay Cuisine in a Local Home in Malacca

Summary Description

Cat learned to cook traditional dishes from her late grandmother and mother, being a fussy eater, she later joined cooking courses to further expand her knowledge and learn new cooking skills and techniques. She also enjoys traveling withing Malaysia and South East Asia and often takes cooking classes when she travels to learn more about other cuisines and cultures. Cat is also passionate about baking and loves to bake her own breads and buns. Cat believes in eating healthy and only uses the best and freshest ingredients of high quality in her cooking. She enjoys meeting people and sharing stories and this has often been the highlight of her travels, and hopes to offer the same experience to travelers coming to Malaysia!

Possible dishes you may try during your experience with Cat are ulam-ulaman (herbs and greens), Pineapple kerabu (salad) with squid chili and petai (green bean), which is a very unique sweet, sour and salty local dish with a lot of new flavors and textures, often served with rice, assam prawns pan fried to perfection in tamarind or fried fish or cincalok (fermented shrimp) and pork pongteh ((Nonya-style braised pork in fermented soy bean).

Description

Cat will serve either Peranakan or Malaysian cuisine, dishes that stem from a mix of Chinese and Malay cultures specific to certain parts of Malaysia, including Malacca. The base for this cuisine would be spicy, salty and is usually prepared using sambal-chilli paste, shallots and belacan or shrimp paste. Peranakan cooking is an endless concoction of flavors, not all dishes are spicy and the level of spiciness can easily be adjusted to match each travelers taste.

Cat also pays a lot of attention to presentation and takes a lot of effort to style and garnish her food. If this is something that interests you, please ask her to give you some food styling tips!
