Meet your guide near the Acropolis in central Athens for your walking tour. Then, head through the Acropolis gate to tour the hilltop citadel (tickets not included), famous for its semi-crumbled buildings from the 5th century BC.
Wander around the 2,500-year-old highlights of the Theater of Dionysus, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, and Temple of Asclepius, formerly a healing center dedicated to the god of medicine.
Learn the stories behind the buildings, and view the Temple of Athena Nike, Propylaea, Caryatid Porch, and magnificent Parthenon.
Then, descend into the Plaka district, Athens’ old town. Enter the cobbled lanes of neo-classical houses and Byzantine churches, and visit the Anafiotika quarter, home to Cyclades-style whitewashed houses built by 19th-century immigrants homesick for their native isles.
Next, explore some of Athens’ food markets, visiting shops selling olive oils, wines, mushrooms, and herbs. Dive into a centuries-old café for a koulóuria (sesame bread), sample loukoumades donuts and filo parcels, and tasty pies and cheeses.
Then, wander through the meat and fish market, stopping for home-made and roasted coffee before perusing and purchasing (own expense) fruit, olives, hams, or other delicacies.
Your tour then ends near Monastiraki Square.
