Included in the UNESCO heritage list, being one of the first centers of human civilization, Gobustan located barely 1 hour drive from Baku. Visit Mud Volcanoes. Azerbaijan is the first in the world by the number of mud volcanoes. 350 out of 800 mud volcanoes in the world are located here! Ateshgah is an ancient Zoroastrian temple of flame built by Indian fire-worshipers' community back in the 17-18th centuries. In the middle of courtyard sits an altar, the centerpiece of the temple where fire rituals were observed. The altar is situated right above the natural gas vent, igniting a large flame in the middle. Visiting Yanardag (“Burning Mountain”) is a hill located on the top of natural gas pocket with continuous flame eruption. Most probably the fire has been burning for over 20,000 years at Yanardag.
