While Pompeii was mainly preserved thanks to a thick layer of volcanic ash and pumice, Herculaneum was buried under a mixture of ash and mud, which solidified over time to create the perfect protection for the fascinating world left frozen in time beneath it. Less than half the size of Pompeii, Herculaneum was a small coastal city characterized by remarkably preserved wooden structures and vibrant frescoes.
