The birthplace of Lord Buddha, Lumbini is a sacred place for Buddhists from all over the world, standing on an equal footing with holy places sacred to other world religions. The sacred garden where Buddha was born converges into the Ashoka pillar, which carries an inscription identifying the birth spot where we can see the seven footsteps of the Budhha. Maya Devi Temple is located close to the Ashoka pillar, which is named after his mother Mayadevi. The statue of Maya Devi is made out of the stone which is believed to be 2000 years old. To the south of Maya Devi Temple, there is Puskar pond where Maya Devi took a bath before giving birth to Buddha. Lord Buddha is also believed to get a purifying bath in the same pond. The whole area of Lumbini is considered as a garden. Many appealing monasteries have been built through the help of different countries such as Thailand, Srilanka, and Japan. It is considered as the International Centre for the Buddhist pilgrimage.
