3-Hour Singaporean Vegetarian Cooking Class at a Local Home
Summary
JJ first learned to cook from her grandmother who prepared family-style Hokkien food on a daily basis. She has worked in the food manufacturing industry for the last 15 years and is proficient in spices and flavorings. Being a "foodologist" she believes that each ingredient should be respected for its history, character and purpose in a dish. JJ is a passionate believer in the importance of shared meals to bring families together and hopes to share her love of simple, satisfying meals with guests at her table. She will share with you the stories behind the dishes she serves as well as detailed information about her favorite local ingredients and cooking styles.
JJ lives in Woodlands, a suburb near the Singapore-Malaysia border crossing. She lives in an HBD apartment with her young daughter and parents, who might be present during your experience. Her parents don't speak English but they love meeting guests! Be sure to ask JJ to show you her little herb garden where she tends several varieties of of basil, coriander, and pandan leaves.
Roll up your sleeves and join JJ in her kitchen to learn to prepare 2-3 Chinese-Singaporean vegetarian or vegan dishes. In your hands-on lesson you will help chop ingredients and stir-fry them to perfection as JJ shares her secrets to create simple, flavorful dishes.
Enjoy a delicious meal that you helped prepare at her welcoming dining table. Singaporean Chinese dishes vary from community to community and JJ can prepare dishes in several styles, including Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka, and Teochew preparations. You might get to sample JJ's green mustard rice, braised tofu in soy sauce, and her green mustard pancake. One of her favorite dishes is preserved radish omelet because it reminds her of her late grandmother and many fond memories from her childhood.
Please note, this is not a professional cooking class, rather this experience is a visit into an authentic, local home to meet a local person and share the culture and cuisine together.
