D’Orsay is a challenging place to do a tour. The collection has a limited scope—French visual art over a 60ish year period—but a huge collection. This makes picking specific works to discuss while explaining their place difficult. No matter what you pick, there’s always going to be an equally worthy work a few steps away. I thought the tour made good choices in hitting the major artistic themes while picking good representation of those themes. Our guide also did a good job of being helpful with exploring the rest of the museum and seeing other places in Paris with related collections.
We’ve been on many tours. The key is always the guide. Claire was as good as they get. Her English was excellent. She was personable and knowledgeable. As with all good guides, she knows how to engage with the people in her group. She dealt with the minuses of the museum well, I thought. The museum is very crowded, very noisy and filled with other tourists and guides jockeying for position. It’s unpleasant. Claire was very good at navigating through this mess while keeping people together. Though we loved the art collection the people collection caused us to leave earlier than we had planned.
