Why take this tour?

To say San Ciriaco Cathedral in the history center at Ancona commands attention from its silent perch at the top of the hill would be an understatement. With it’s linear structure and reserved stoned facade, all the features are a haunting memory of both Romanesque-Byzantine architecture, and even, (remember we said “commanding”) staunch Gothic elements that tell of the city’s varied past. Today the Cathedral sits on the site of the former Greek acropolis from the time of the city’s founding.

After a short walk up the hill to San Ciriaco, admire the ruins of a former era - the Arch of Trajan who ruled the Roman Empire during the 2nd century, and the “Mole Vanvitelliana” with its pentagon form as your guide shares stories from its first days as, (and we are not kidding) a quarantine station. Next, you will visit the church of Santa Maria della Piazza, a stunning piece of Romanesque architecture whose layered structure is restored to feature both the 11th-12th century church as well as the remains of the 6th-7th century church.

Next, it is time to walk the central piazza of Piazza del Plebiscito where traditional Italian architecture greets at every turn as you head to Corso Mazzini to visit the 16th century Fontana del Calamo. With 13 bronze masks spouting water through their mouths, your guide will share the somewhat macabre story of their believed intention - an effigy for those who have been beheaded in this incredible city!
