Summary | Explore the history and beauty of Bergamo, a town dating back to 49 BC with an expert guide at your side. The city of Bergamo is divided up into two sections - Basso, the lower town and newer section (by Italian standards) and Alto, the upper and older section of the city. Upper Bergamo is home to ancient palaces and medieval streets. As you stroll through the city with your guide, you will see many of the spectacular sites that make Alta Bergamo a paradise for budding photographers and historians alike. |
Description | Meet your expert guide at Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe and begin your journey through the medieval streets of upper Bergamo. This part of town contains a lot of history within its Venetian walls. On this 2.5 hour tour, your guide will show you the secrets and sites dating back to 49 BC, including the best vistas and overlooks to capture memories of a lifetime. Stroll the cobblestone streets up to Rocco Castle, a 14th-century stronghold offering some of the best views of Basso Bergamo (Remember? That’s lower town!) and the nearby valleys. Continue on to the center of the Alta called Piazza Vecchia. Learn about history and hear stories from your guide as you gaze at ancient palaces and the impressive civic tower. Next, see a true treasure of Romanesque art, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, and have the chance to discover the cathedral, Baptistery, and Colleoni Chapel. Follow your guide for a walk along Bergamo’s main street, Via Corsarola, and take in the lively ambiance created by this area’s mix of the old and the new. You will continue your experience with a visit to the charming 14th-century Cittadella, then a walk to Colle Aperto, the perfect spot to end your tour, where you will be amazed at the panoramic views. |
