The siege of Sarajevo was the longest siege of a city in the history of modern warfare. Sarajevo was under constant blockade and artillery fire for 1425 days (05.04.1992-29.02.1996). During the siege of Sarajevo, the only way in and out of the city was by using the handmade tunnel built under the UN-controlled airport. Tunnel, often called Tunnel of Hope or Gates of Sarajevo was the only in and out of the city. A tunnel was built in order to link the city of Sarajevo, which was entirely cut off, with Bosnian-held territory on the other side of the Sarajevo Airport, an area controlled by the United Nations. The construction of Tunnel allowed food, supplies, and humanitarian aid to come into the city, and allowed people to get out.
