Why take this tour?

Contrasting beautifully with Bergamo’s popular Citta Alta - or upper town - lower Bergamo is a true gem. Neoclassical-appointed city streets, enchanting medieval boroughs, a bustling shopping district, and myriad hidden gems to discover, the Citta Bassa has plenty to offer the discerning traveler. The best way to experience them all in a relatively short time? With a local, who’ll unveil the city by peeling back its many layers so you can get a true understanding of what makes it so special.

Your tour begins at the city’s train station, where your guide will introduce you to the history of the area. Making your way towards the center of the town, you’ll first saunter along its main alley - built in the mid-19th-century becoming more and more familiar with the city as your guide shares some of its most fascinating stories. Emerging at the pretty Porta Nuova, you’ll take in a breathtaking view of the Citta Alta - it’s even more beautiful from below!

Crossing through to the Sentierone (meaning ‘broad path’), your guide will explain why this area has been a favorite among Lombardy’s most stylish inhabitants for centuries (and the perfect place to people-watch!). Getting to know the city a little more intimately, you’ll take in Marcello Piacentini’s Torre dei Caduti memorial tower and survey a bronze piece by the sculptor Giacomo Manzù, created in honor of Italy’s partisans.

Another elegant attraction that gives Bergamo’s lower town its character is the lush green oasis of the Santa Marta Cloister, which you’ll stop off at before making your way further into the center of the city.

As the tour comes to an end, you’ll part ways with your guide in an area bursting with great boutiques and restaurants - but not before you find out the best spots to eat, drink and shop so that you can make the most of your visit.
